Dr. Konstantinos Stavropoulos of Product Marketing for Amdocs, a 5G authority, reviews the current status of the EU 5G and US 5G implementations to Don Witt of The Channel Daily News from Telecom Reseller providing a very good description of both EU and US efforts in trying to accelerate the process. Irrespective of the EU stance, it is important for service providers to optimize their utilization of spectrum, in a ‘static’ or ‘dynamic’ manner. The deployment of new, more spectrum-efficient wireless technologies – incl. 5G – is one approach but not the single one. We can expand on these approaches, as required. The EU requirements could apply to government-owned (similar to the Spectrum Access System or SAS discussion in the US) and to unlicensed spectrum, and potentially even to service provider owned spectrum. In the latter case, service providers would lease their available spectrum to other service providers, based on a ‘similar’ logic to SAS. Of course, the commercial and technical implications here are significant. Again, we can expand on those, as required. Would the EU penalize countries and/or service providers who do not ‘use spectrum effectively and efficiently’? Service providers may have to prove that they are using this valuable resource in the best possible way. Maybe EU would standardize a spectrum efficiency index, similar to the energy efficiency index we have been used to. The definition of this index would be an interesting exercise, and we can expand on the challenges associated with such an exercise.
